F.A.Q.

Q: Can I buy a ZWI?
A: The ZWI is a D.I.Y. project. If I were to sell ZWIs, I would not be able to offer any technical support. There is a chance that I may have some spares at ZAKU shows, which you are welcome to buy with the understanding that it may take some technical know-how to maintain and operate it.

Q: Where can I get a ZWI pcb?
A: You can get a free PCB at any ZAKU shows. The gerbers will be added to the ZWI github soon if you would like to make your own. Once we print some more shirts, we'll mail a PCB with any shirt orders.

Q: Do I need a reflow oven or rework station to build a ZWI?
A: Only a soldering pen is required. All components are through-hole. Please use lead free solder.

Q: Does the ZWI have it's own audio engine?
A: Yes! You can find a block diagram of the syntesis structure in the resources bar. It puts out MQS audio through the 3.5mm jack, or 24 bit audio over USB.

Q: Does the ZWI support MIDI?
A: Yes, but only basic commands for now (Note on, Note off, Breath, Pitch). All MIDI is sent over TX channel 1.

Q: How do I power the ZWI?
A: The ZWI powers over USB. Use whatever 5v USB power is handy! Your computer, a wall wart adapter, cigarette lighter adapter in the car (only play ZWI as a passenger, and ideally in a Toyota MR2 AW11), or a rechargable phone power bank, etc.

Q: Where can I learn more about wind synthesis?
A: Patchman Music has an excellent FAQ linked on their homepage. The Facebook page "Wind Controllers / Wind Synthesizers" is a very helpful community. Listen to T-Square, The Rippingtons, and Michael Brecker.
